Is your Netflix queue giving you movie suggestions that are not your type? You can stop looking elsewhere—I will make it very easy for you. Here are five movies that you need to watch right away.
When you finish with these five, check back here on PopSpective where I will share more lists of “must watch” content on Netflix.
One side note. Depending on where you live, some of these movies may not be available in your region, but I assure you that Netflix has them all. To watch the movies that are not available in your region, all you need is a good streaming VPN for Netflix.
Check out these five movies:
1. Goodfellas
Director: Martin Scorsese
Writers: Nicholas Pileggi and Martin Scorsese
Cast: Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Lorraine Bracco, Joe Pesci, and Paul Sorvino
Based on the real-life story of the infamous gangster, Henry Hill, this movie does justice to the character. It shows the gangster’s life living with the mob with Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito. Not only that, the movie also focuses on the intimate relationship that Henry shares with his wife, Karen Hill.
We get to know the real reason why Henry Hill once said, “Being a gangster was better than being president of the United States!” The movie is a marvel when it comes to the art of storytelling. Even though it left out some of the famous criminal escapades of Henry Hill, the plot is well thought, and executed beautifully on screen.
Goodfellas was not always this popular and in-demand. Released back in 1990, it managed to receive acknowledgement only from Roger Ebert, who said, “no finer film has ever been made about organized crime—not even The Godfather”. It was not until 2012 that Henry Hill died while in custody and the film started receiving worldwide popularity.
2. Mudbound
Directed by: Dee Rees
Written by: Virgil Williams and Dee Rees
Starring: Carey Mulligan, Mary J. Blige, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell, Rob Morgan, Jason Clarke, and Jonathan Banks
Having won dozens of awards in film festivals that took place around the world in 2017, as well as getting nominated for hundreds of other awards, Mudbound is a must watch for all audiences. It is a story of two brothers who return to their home after fighting the World War II, only to find that things have changed.
Dealing with situations like radical racism, both men try to learn to live on their new lives but are often faced by nightmares of their combat. Both men belong to different races, but having served time together, they develop a bond so intense that it seemed like an extramarital affair.
David Sims from The Atlantic pointed out that “Mudbound” is the kind of movie that deserves a huge audience, which its release on Netflix may help secure”. Now that this movie is available on Netflix, I am betting on this one big time.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Written and Directed by: James Gunn
Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Kurt Russell, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Elizabeth Debicki, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel
An American superhero film that’s based in the Marvel Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a sequel to its predecessor, released in 2014. This time around, the “guardians” are destined to travel across the cosmos and help out their friend Peter Quill to learn about his ambiguous percentage.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is no typical interstellar warfare that shows the forces of good battling against the evil. It is filled with humor and suspense, and its direction and cinematography give it an edge over the latest and most high-budget animated movies releases in the recent times.
The first part of Guardians of the Galaxy was perhaps better in some areas than its sequel. That being said, it is still a great movie to watch and enjoy for all kinds of audiences.
4. The Ritual
Director: David Bruckner
Writer: Joe Barton
Cast: Rafe Spall, Arsher Ali, Robert James-Collier, Sam Troughton
Slightly inspired from the Norse mythology, The Ritual is about four friends going on a hiking trip to Sweden, in the memory of their fifth fallen friend. Due to a contingency detour, the group is lost in the woods where a barbaric and lethal creature lurks.
Since its release, The Ritual has gained worldwide popularity and we believe that it totally deserves it! The amazing amalgamation of psychological terror with emotions, along with superior art-direction calls for a round of applause for the director of the movie, David Bruckner.
As the movie unfolds, each of the four friends face their fears and nightmares, causing them to fall apart and turn against each other. Or is it the creature that is making them act and think in strange ways? That’s something you need to see for yourself.
5. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Director: Adam McKay
Writers: Adam McKay and Will Ferrell
Cast: Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amy Adams, Gary Cole, Leslie Bibb, Jane Lynch, and Michael Clarke Duncan

It’s a story about NASCAR Superstar, Ricky Bobby, who is born to be the fastest driver. His career and fame comes to a stand-still as he faces a defining injury in French Formula One.
With the help of his ruthless father, his beautiful wife, and his kids, Ricky is on the pursuit to recover his health and make his way back to the racing tracks to restore is honor and wealth. The movie is full of humor and witty dialogues that will keep you hooked till the credits start rolling.
